How to Avoid Late Fees on Credit Cards

by How To Magazine on August 30, 2010

How to Avoid Late Fees on Credit Cards

Although it may be overstated, there is a lot of truth to people ruining their credit score due to missing payments and paying their credit card bills late.  The fees can pile up and the interest rates can grow before you know it, and after a while you won’t even be able to pay the minimum amount of payment.  If you don’t do something fast – it could be the beginning of the end.

To make sure this don’t happen to you, you should always pay your bill on time, and always avoid missing a payment.  Sometimes, it can be hard to make your payments on time, although you should always do everything in your power to ensure that you stay on top of things.  Below, you’ll find some tips to help you with your credit card payments.

As stated above, you should always pay your bill on time.  If something comes up and you aren’t able to pay, you’ll be penalized.  Even though you may think what has come up will justify a late payment, it doesn’t justify the means in the eyes of your credit card company.  Inside of your bill, you’ll find detailed instructions regarding payment.  You should always follow them as accurately as possible, pay where and when you are supposed to pay – and do it on time.

If you simply aren’t able to pay your entire bill, you shouldn’t worry about it – but instead pay the minimum amount possible.  Even though you may be able to pay more later, you should always pay at least the minimum amount.  Then, when you have more money, you can always add to your minimum payment by sending in an additional payment.

The easiest way to do this, is to always have the minimum payment amount set aside, so that you have it once your credit card bill arrives.  Once you have assured yourself that you won’t be penalized or charged any late fees, you should look into paying a higher amount than just the minimum balance.  By paying the minimum amount, you’ll also ensure that no other fees will be added to your next credit card bill.

Another option includes skip a payment, although you’ll need to check whether or not your credit card company offers it or not.  This service will allow you to request a waiver regarding your payment, when something comes up and you don’t have the money to pay your bill.  Make sure that you use this service wisely if you have it, as it can only be used once a year.  Therefore, you should always ensure that the situation is truly an emergency and there are no other options available for you.  This service will normally have a cost as well, and you’ll need to pay it the following month.

Although credit cards can be great for numerous reasons, you should always know your interest rates and have a good general idea of what your bill is going to be before you make a purchase.  Many times, those who have credit cards will make purchases, knowing they can’t make the payments – then suffer when they get the bill and aren’t able to pay it.

Anytime you have a credit card, you should always make sure that you have the money to pay the bill, or the minimum amount, the minute it arrives.  This way, you’ll remain in good standing with your company and your credit score will continue to increase.  If you simply aren’t able to make your payment, you should contact your credit card issuer immediately and see if you can work something out.

How to Find Your Family Tree Online

by How To Magazine on August 30, 2010

How to Find Your Family Tree Online

If you’re looking for your family roots, the Internet is a great platform to search for a wide array of family history records. From official census record, obituary resources and genealogy resources, you’ll find everything you need online.

If you want to learn more about your family tree, you’ll have a pretty good chance of digging up some related information on the Worldwide Web. The trick to getting the right information online, lies on how you use the available resources, databases and tools. Learn how to verify the facts and dates, and if possible, contact the researcher/s, and help them re-trace their steps. Here are a number of helpful online resources to help you in you family tree search.

Check Out Obituary Notices

There are many obituary search engines online which can help make the family tree search a much easier one. Your local newspaper’s obituary section may be a good start for finding details. However, if you can’t find anything relevant there, you can do a city, town or county search. Also ensure that you also include an obituary search for siblings and cousins, and other direct descendants.

Visit Your Local Library

Your city or town’s public library can also be a nice location for acquiring information on your family history. You can also drop by historical and genealogical societies in your area, or in the cities or towns where your ancestors lived. Go to your public library’s Web page too, and find online indexes, abstracts and published genealogical records. If you can’t find local and family history books online, you may borrow them directly from your local librarian.

Census Records are Great Resources For Spotting Family History Records

Public census records provide a treasure trove of information on the records of people who lived around the beginning of the 20th Century. In the United States, Canada and United Kingdom, as well as in other countries, public census records are readily available. In most census records, you can easily find living and recently deceased family members listed in the database. Once you find the general records, you can start tracing the family tree back through previous censuses, so that you can add a generation or more to your family tree.

Search For Information From Online Forums and Message Boards

You can also find interesting tidbits of information about your family’s history from online mailing lists, groups and message boards. You can search the archives of the lists and groups that are related to your surname. These online groups may be able to yield family histories, obituary records and other vital pieces of the genealogical puzzle. Some groups or message boards however, require that you join first, free of charge, before you can begin searching for archived information.

How to Overcome Emotional Eating

by How To Magazine on August 30, 2010

How to Overcome Emotional Eating

Eating is a part of life.  Your body gets its nutrients from food.  Sometimes we can go overboard with our eating habits and it can result in gaining weight.  One issue with food is emotional eating.

The problem of emotional eating may end with the scale but it begins in the mind.  Stress takes its toll on your life.  When your defenses are compromised your health takes a hit and so do your emotions.

Everyone has good days and bad days.  How we deal with the bad ones brings emotional eating into play.  You look for comfort for your hurts.  People who turn to food for comfort find a coping mechanism that won’t judge them, hurt them or tell them “no.” To complicate the issue, eating pleasurable foods can stimulate the release of endorphins just like exercise.  So, after you eat, you feel better.

Emotional eaters use food to relieve stress.  They hide behind the food instead of seeking solutions to the problems.  This is not uncommon when the stressor is something horrible such as physical abuse or a death.

But, how do you know you are using food in this way?  The first sign is obvious.  You will gain weight if you eat too much.  In light of the weight gain, examine other areas of your life:

* Have you been under stress lately at work or at home?
* Has anything traumatic happened in the last year?
* Are you dealing with a problem but haven’t found a solution?

Answering “yes” to any of these questions could mean that you are an emotional eater.  You eat but you are not necessarily hungry at the time.  The foods that you choose are what we term “comfort foods”:

* High fat foods like French fries, fried foods
* High carb foods like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes
* Sugary foods like ice cream, donuts, cookies, cake

There is help for emotional eaters.  The first step is recognizing that you have a problem.  You’ll experience feelings of helplessness and guilt.  The guilt is over potentially ruining your health and the helplessness lies in the fact that you don’t see a way out.

Secondly, seek counseling.  There are many types of counselors out there that can meet your need.  Emotional eating has nothing to do with dieting or changing your eating habits but gaining control over your emotions.

A counselor might suggest things like visualization, practicing problem solving skills, relaxation techniques and family support.  Visualization helps you to see your problems in a realistic way and not blown out of proportion.  You will also learn to see food as nutrition for the body and not an emotional crutch.

Thirdly, your family can learn your triggers for stress and be on the lookout for changes in your eating habits.  They can help you be aware of the foods you are eating, assist you in making healthy food choices and exercise along with you.  Proper diet and exercise increases immunity, blood flow and positive thinking.  Yoga enhances the mind/body connection so you don’t eat when you aren’t hungry.

Finding new ways to solve your problems and deal with stress will push food out of the equation.  You’ll feel good about finding solutions which will replace the dependence on food.
